The surgeon called. Fiona has a condtion, Stomatitis or something like that. It's a condtion that get progressively worse during their life. Her cheeks and mouth are infected, it's bad, she has seen worse. But for a 1.5 year old its not good that it's this bad so early on. The only thing they can do is clean her teeth, put her on daily meds, cortisone, teeth brushing, mouth rinses, and extraction of all her teeth in the back. She will need regular vet visits to check on her teeth and gums, and probably tooth extractions. She suggested taking her to a cat dental specialist. She wanted to know what I wanted her to do, don't do anything, take her to a specialist... I told her that I can't afford to shop around right now, clean her teeth, extract those 2 teeth if needed and then we would take it from there. She said she hates to put cats on cortisone, but her mouth is bad, there is no cure other than extracting teeth in the back.
So, that is my update for now. Maybe if there is any money left we can take her to a specialist when her mouth get better from the teeth cleaning and tooth extraction. Now I have 2 cats that have progressive health problems and who need regular vet visits, specialists and expensive testing and care.
Fiona is out of surgery. They cleaned her teeth, they did not pull any teeth. The problem is in the gums and mouth. They want to try the least invasive treatment. They can always pull teeth if needed. She will need antibiotics for about 2 months straight, daily oral rinse, and maybe cortisone. Harry Spotter can also get infected. He already got the virus from her, he can also get the oral probelms as well. She is out of surgery, she is doing well and we can pick her up in a few hours. She will need post-op visits to the vet and lots of meds for now and maybe see dental specialist.
Fiona is home, she doing well, a little wobbly but well. The vet advised to take it one step at a time. You can always pull the teeth if needed. That is the only cure, to pull all the teeth. She is so young that they really don't want to do it now. They want to wait and see how she reacts to 2 months of antibitotics, oral rinse, etc. We are hoping that Spot does not come down with the dental disease. That would devastating for him with his heart murmur. So, now we take it one step at a time.
I want to thank everyone who made today possible. Without your help she would not of had her surgery, teeth cleaning, meds and money left for her post-op vet visits.
You have been a blessing to us and to Fiona and Harry Spotter.
Thank you ....

Oh, dear......poor Fiona. Isn't there someone you can report Sphynx Cattery to????? There must be a regulatory agency for catteries???? We hear so much about puppy mills, but feel this has to definitely be a kitty mill. We continue to purr for Fiona and for Spot....and send our love.
I hate to say this but I'd opt for pulling the teeth - all of them. At least she would be disease free and relatively healthy. I've seen many cats with NO teeth eat well and live long lives.
This just breaks my heart...I don't know if you have the energy, fight, or even the time to do it (you probably don't), but I would take this breeder to small claims court at the least. Here in California you can go to small claims court for anything $5000 or less...You have your contract and the vet diagnosis to back it all up. I don't know if you are in the same state as the breeder though. My heart goes out to you guys. I know you are doing all you can for her. Many purrs and hugs going your way.
Thank you for the updates and we are purring for Fiona.
Big hugs,
Loki
Oh dear, poor Fiona. We think dat Maw over at forty paws haf a kitty wif dis...and yes, cats can eat, live and haf a good life even wifout teefs. Even dry food!
We're glad Fiona is out of surgery and recovering. We're sorry that you are having to cope with all of this. We're with Fambly Kittys on the extractions. Stomatitis and FORLS (and the complications from them and the endless treatments/cleaning) can really take its toll on cats and their humans. It can be a demanding and stressful regime that whilst sometimes slowing the progress of the disease, doesn't often (in our experience as cat owners) stop or cure it. Two of our current cats have had full extractions and done very well because there is no further cause of the endless infections. One of them still eats biscuits too! Both have neen much happier and fitter since those teeth came out. As poor Fiona has an underlying viral condition, the stress of mouth pain and the management regime might also cause the virus to flare as well. We know how awful this situation is for you, how stressful and also how expensive. If you can find a Veterinary Dentist for Fiona, they have better techniques and specialist training to do mutliple extractions and tend to do a better job than general practice vets. We had to learn the hard way about the limitations of general practice vets and dental work. You might be able to find a veterinary dental department that teaches specialist courses at your nearest veterinary school - worth a look! They might be able to do work for lower prices too.
For now, we send rumbly purrs and love that sweet Fiona recovers well and takes to the management regime ok. We send you strength and we are thinking of you all.
Whicky's Mum
(and Whicky)
I know of cats with stomatitis who had all the teeth pulled and healed fine. Also try a holistic vet - I have a one and she has helped me thru many kitty illnesses with herbs and homeopathic remedies. I use olive leaf powder as an anitviral. Purring and praying for both Spot and Fiona.
We are so sorry to hear about poor Fiona. We are purring very hard for her and hope she does better now...we are purring for all of you too...you've been through so much....
Well, that is sad! Two cats with progressive health problems from the same cattery? How many other cats have been and are being adopted from there that have the same or other health problems. We feel terrible for Fiona -- and for you, we know you're concerned about Fiona and Spotter.
So sad to hear those news. I admire you for your strenght and for not giving up. Here in Portugal people abandon pets just because they want to go on vacation and don't want to pay for a pet hotel. I wish there were more people like you in Portugal, willing to do everything they can for their pets. We would see way less abandoned animals on the streets.
Just hang in there. I'm purring for you...
Feline kisses from Gotchi
We will be purring and purring and purring and purring for you Fiona!!!
we is purring for Fiona. our one who came before losted his teefs from the same thing - and he lived a full and happy life after all his teefs was gone. we doesn't know if this will help Fiona, but it might be worf talking to the v-e-t.
We are just glad she's out of surgery for now!
Smoochies!
We is sorry da mews is not better. Poor alla yous! We is wonnerin bout that cattery an their vet... maybe you can talk wif a lawyer pro-bono (dat means no green papers). Has you talked to anyone else who gotted cats frum them?
Did we suggest UW Madison's vet school? MATC also has trainin fur vet assistants. Da travel costs mite be worth it if you gets better care fur Fiona.
We is furry sorry an concerned fur alla yous. Hugs an purrs,
Victor, Nina & Tabbymom Jen
We are sorry to read about poor Fiona!
We will purr and purray for both kitties!
Get well soon!
Meowm is saying bad words. We are so very sorry that Fiona, Spot and all of you are having to deal with this. We wish we knew of a way to get this cattery closed, as it seems they are not taking proper care of their animals...at least not the litters that Fiona and Spot came from. We will amp up our purring and hope for the very best.
Glad to hear she is finished with the procedure.
I am so glad that Fiona is home and doing ok for now. It will be tough for a while but we hope that she gets better with the rinsing, meds and won't have to go through too much, although we do know that this is a very hard disease to deal with. We had no idea it could be contagious so we also hope that Harry Spotter won't get infected too. We are still sending lots of purrs and prayers for both of them to be ok.
You really do not want me to post what I think about that breeder - I wish there was something we could do to report them but I looked and didn't find anything for Illinois as far as that goes. But at least you are letting people know about the problems and we can all pass that on to others who may have been thinking of using them, so they pick another breeder instead.
Our kitty Kirzon has dental issues (he is actually going in for a cleaning on the 15th) and had to have one tooth extracted, but they are nowhere near as bad as Fiona has, and he is much older (13). After dealing with him where his is not that bad, I just can't imagine how hard it must be for you with her. We hope that the auction is able to raise the money you need and more so that maybe you can see a specialist.
Please let people know, that during this short time of the next auction, anything anyone buys at Our Mom's Etsy Site, all of the proceeds will go to your fiona fund. :) thanks! ~Hansel, Tesla, and ben ben (not logged in)
We just don't know what to say.
We feel bad for Fiona and will continue to purr for her (and Harry)
We feel bad for all the kitties from that cattery too and their beans.
(((((((((((HUGS))))))))))
Purrs Mickey, Georgia & Tillie
Poor Fiona. We are purring for her and Spot. We hope you can get legal help to make the cattery face up to their responsibilities. The teeth extraction sounds like the better option in the long run. Our mum had an old cat who didn't have a tooth in her head and she would get more meat off a bone than any of the younger cats.
(((hugs))) to all of you.
We're so sorry that poor Fiona has go to through this. We're purring for Fiona and for Spot.
Sniffie and the Florida Furkids
Poor Fiona! I am so sorry to hear about her health issues and the fact that the cattery is not taking responsibility for the health issues. I will continue to purr for both Fiona and Spot.
We are so glad that Fiona is safe and at home. At least now she can begin the real healing. It's terrible that she has this condition at such a young age, and that Spot has caught it now, too.
We're sending our healing vibes along to them both. Hopefully, the New Year will be brighter and healthier all around.
Fiona is in our prayers! We hope that she will start feeling better and better.
Hi, it's Teri, still visiting family in Oregon, but keeping close eye on Fiona and the auction!
I read all your post about Fiona and I hope she responds to just the cleaning and meds.
But Whicky's mom had excellent advice, and her cats experiences with stomatitis and FORL's (like in the info links I emailed you)and while people cringe at the thought of having full mouth extractions, you would not believe how well cats do afterwards.
At the cat hospital where I work we probably have 6 cats that have had that done, we do it in 2 stages as it is major surgery and especially the lower jawbone can be very fragile.
In a way, the teeth act like when we get a splinter in our finger and it gets red and festers and the body tries to push out the splinter to the surface.
In an affected cat, the same thing happens in a way but instead of a splinter, it's the teeth that cause the problem.
Whicky's mums advice about seeing if there is a Veterinary Dentist in the area is a good idea too. There is one near where I work and some of our clients opt to go there too as they have better dental xray units and that is all they do, so their staff is very highly trained.
Also, looking for a vet school is another good idea. I used to take my cats down to UC Davis in California when I lived in Oregon for their heart scans etc and it cost about 1/4 as much as they are a teaching hospital but the students don't do the procedures, honestly!
I have email access while she is away so email me if you need to talk and I'll give you my cell phone #
how expensive. If you can find a Veterinary Dentist for Fiona, they have better techniques and specialist training to do mutliple extractions and tend to do a better job than general practice vets. Bless heart! We are so sorry to hear about Fiona's stomatitis. We've heard of that before and how painful it can be. We will continue to send lots and lots of healing purrs to Fiona and Spot. (((HUGS)))
we purrs & purrays that dear fiona responds quickly an' well to her cleaning an' meds! whicky's mum is furry nowlejible, an' miss teri of furrydance, too--they has kindly advized us of stuff an' been right all the way down the line. once you get fiona stablized, you will feel more in control and able to make a well-considered decision. we will purr for dat, too!! bless you, furriends!
Sending PURRS and PRAYERS!
♥
I'm glad Fiona's home. I was wondering about her all day today, and just came by to check on how things went. I know you all will make the best decision for her -- I hope she can get well soon, and stay well!
Me and Pimp and Moo will keep thinking of her and sending healing Cute vibes over to her and Spot!
We are sending many and many good thoughts and healing purrs for poor Fiona. It is never a furry good thing when the mouth hurts.
I am so praying and urring that this helps and Fiona can start to feel a lot better. Thank you for keeping us updated. For some reason you eep disapearing from my blog roll.HGoing to try and put you in again now. Huge hugs GJ x
We are all so sorry that Fiona and Harry have such serious problems. If love and purrs can help ~ they will get better soon as we're sending lots.
Poor little Fiona! At the shelter here, there were several cats with stomatitis and they did really well after they had their teeth removed. You wouldn't even know they had no teeths! I hope Fiona feels much better soon.
Thinking of all at your place. Each day Fiona will be better than the day before. Sending loves, head butts, and prayers across the miles between us.
Wishing you and your family the best for the new year coming!
Oh dear. We are so sorry to hear that the news is not better for little Fiona. We agree that Whicky's Mum's (Everycat) advice sounds very good, and hope the auctions etc. will make it possible to go to a dental vet.
Sending loud purrs and gentle woofs,
All your friends at The Poupounette
